As a Regional Delegate from BRITISH COLUMBIA, I arrived in Toronto on Saturday the sixteenth at around 6:30 pm with fellow British Columbia delegates: Ariel, Anne, Gabriella, and Madi. We arrived a day earlier as we wanted to get settled in and not have to stress about flying in on the day of the competition. At the airport, we met up with Courtney a former MTC delegate who met up with Ariel before hand. With Courtney our chaperone, we headed off to the hotel. At the hotel, we checked into our home, settled in, and discussed what to expect for our upcoming pageant. We shared a lot of laughs, had fun, dined at the restaurant and then proceeded to our rooms to get a good night’s sleep. The next day at around 7 pm we entered into the ballroom at the Airport Holiday Inn in Toronto. The delegate’s Welcome Party was held there to attend the Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Search for Miss Teenage Canada. I was feeling excited when I walked passed the doors to the ballroom and seeing all the girls there. It was amazing to think that I was in a room filled with such accomplished young ladies. The party was neatly organized with our sponsor’s booths neatly surrounding the room. I proceeding to go around and thank and take pictures with our sponsors. They had some really cool things in store for us!
Archer Dental provided us was Oral B traveler’s toothbrushes! Being in a competition where you smile a lot, it is important that your teeth are in the best condition possible! It was kind for Archer Dental to be so considerate.
I don’t know about you but I love fashion so when Nuvango came bearing designer clothes to give especially to us- I was so thrilled! Not just I but the other delegates looked content with the gifts provided to us. On Tuesday, July 19th, the Miss Teenage Canada 2016 delegates will be making our way to the Nuvango headquarters. I’m extremely excited for it!

The kind people of V.P.I. Canada provided free designer sunglasses to each delegate- AWESOME RIGHT! I found my chic pair of sunglasses (which are the “Round Framed Vintage Style Sunglasses“) on their website for $28 dollars including shipping-amazing deal right?! Thank you so much for the rad gift! To get your own cool shades check them out on their social media accounts.
Rimmel London will be providing us with a crazy amount of awesome products for our goodie bags. I am so stoked to see what will be provided for us. Having them as our sponsor is just too cool as I know a good majority or the delegates LOVE makeup.
@Find them on Instagram & Twitter: @rimmelllondoncan,
Hashtagio is a “Social Media Aggregator and User Generated Marketing Platform” that was present at the Welcome Party collecting all our social media tagged photos with the hashtag #MissTeenageCanada2016. The pictures were then projected live at the party. What makes Hashtagio even better, is that they make a single feed URL, which people such as our parents and friends can subscribe to. Which allows them to follow along in real time as we experience all the vast activities here in Toronto while we compete for the title, visit sponsors, and tour the city. All of the issued images and texts from all of the s delegates will be archived on this page in the Miss Teenage Canada main site. As well on the Miss Teen Canada Blog Network / Search for Miss Teenage Canada 2016.

Sam Dhutia a representative from Sweets Canada attended the party. He was sampling out amazingly, delicious, chocolate! Which was pretty awesome because girl, I love my chocolate!!! I had a sample of the Ginger dark chocolate bar and it was an explosion of flavour. I like ginger but I wasn’t . It just shows that no matter what you should try new things. Sam created a very informative and extremely delicious chocolate tasting exhibit – after each sampling he generously gave out gourmet chocolate bars , and or edible flower chocolate bars, depending on each delegate’s individual preferences, as discovered during the tastings.
Sally Hansen will be providing awesome products for our gift bags! I am looking forward to seeing what wonderful goodies we will be getting.
BATA SHOE MUSEUM
Now…let’s talk about shoes. The Bata Shoe Museum carries an enormous and impressive collection of shoes. These shoes come from all around the world and there are also displays of shoes worn by celebrities. At The Bata Shoe Museum, you will be amazed by all the different shoes from the past to the present.
BRADLEE RYALL GOLF ACADEMY
Another fun exhibit at the Welcome Party was from Bradlee Ryall Golf Academy. At Bradlee Ryall Golf Academy they teach golf lessons at six golf courses west of Toronto. We will all be going to the golf academy to be taught how to golf and are also given the opportunity to win prizes as well.
FISHD BY EDO
If you want to eat a delicious, hunger quenching meal- I recommend going to FishD By Edo! The delegates were served yummy Veggie Burrito’s and we were satisfyingly full after.
There was a bow and arrow set up at the Welcome Party at the Archers Arena booth. We were all very excited when we were told that we would be playing Archery Tag in Toronto at Archers Arena later on this week.
Yogen Fruz provided each delegate with a $15 coupon which we will be giving to the Miss Teenage Canada 2016 prize pack.
STORIA PR Inc.
A big thank you to Daphna and Karen Nussbaum from Storia PR in Toronto. They are a huge part of the 2016 Search for Miss Teenage Canada experience and will be retweeting our journey and amplifying much of the media we make, everywhere we go this week.
It’s crazy to think that by tomorrow I will be on a plane to Toronto to compete in Miss Teenage Canada. I’ve been so busy this past week driving around, meeting sponsors, getting stuff that I need and I haven’t even packed (whoops). I have been waiting for this moment and it’s finally happening…It feels so surreal.
We were just recently assigned our second blog assignment “where we challenge our blogger’s graphic design skills”. For this new assignment, we were asked to come up with our own unique design MTC Rollup Banner and incorporate the MTC logo and aesthetic. What makes this even more exciting, a delegate’s design will be chosen as the official roll-up banner!
Sign Source Solution will be kindly donating the roll-up banner to the Miss Teenage Canada Organization. Sign Source Solution is a printing company that specializes in “full service, custom – sign manufacturing company”.
I definitely recommend you check them out!
Now…For the reveal…
TA – DA!!!
I wanted to keep it elegant but fun and so the sparkles were added. Adding the quote “Be your own kind of beautiful” was a must. The quote is what MTC stands for and so do I.
So…What do you think? 🙂
Miss Teenage Maple Ridge 2016
“Maple Ridge is a great destination for an active lifestyle”
Maple Ridge is a small city, which happens to be surrounded by breathtaking scenery like no other community in British Columbia. Along the southern side of town, there is the Fraser River, where our city first developed due to settlement along the Fraser River back in 1874. Up the north side of Maple Ridge, we have our Provincial Park Golden Ears. Golden Ears inhabitants mountains, trails, lakes and lush forest. As the seasons change, the scenery in Maple Ridge grows even more stunning. Whether you live in town or outside of it every part of the city has something beautiful it offers. I find that a lot of people from my community enjoy the great outdoors and Maple Ridge is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Maple Ridge not only attracts people from its own community but because of it’s natural settings; people from all over visit Maple Ridge year round. I love the city where I am from and proud to represent Maple Ridge!
Outdoor Activities in Maple Ridge
Golden Ears Provincial Park
There are various outdoor activities available to pursue in Maple Ridge. Anywhere across the city, I guarantee that you will be able to find an activity that will suit your taste. If you are looking for a place to connect with nature or just simply to enjoy the outdoors: Golden Ears Provincial Park is the place for you! Being one of the biggest parks in British Columbia, Golden Ears is well sought out for its endless recreational possibilities. Golden Ears Provincial Park also has three campgrounds on site, which is quite the popular destination during the summer for many tourists. Located in the park is also Alouette Lake, which is a popular spot for swimming, canoeing, boating and fishing. The Park is absolutely gorgeous and very popular in the summer time!
Maple Ridge Park
Located near Golden Ears Provincial Park is Maple Ridge Park. At Maple Ridge Park, you can enjoy a day out with friends and family to bbq, tube in the creek, play on the playground and splash around in the water park. I came to the park on multiple occasions growing up. Whether it was a birthday party, a bbq even, or just fun leisure time with the family. Maple Ridge Park is a great environment to take the whole family out and appreciate the outdoors!
Music on the Wharf
If you want to spend a relaxing night out in town I recommend visiting Music on the Wharf located on Port Haney Wharf. The local event takes place in the evening, overlooking the Fraser River. Music on the Wharf started in 1997 and has taken place ever since. It features local and regional musicians and bands from a wide range of musical genres such as Blues, Jazz, Rock and more. Music on the Wharf is a local summer concert the whole family can enjoy but you have to get there early as the best seating fills up fast!
One attraction in particular that attracts tourist to Maple Ridge is Wildplay.
WildPlay was founded by Gordon Ross and Tom Benson who are certified guides, passionate climbers, paragliding pilots, and environment enthusiasts. The two wanted others to experience the same love that they had for the environment, climbing and challenges and thus the two discovered that they could create a challenging outdoor experience that could be experienced by adults, teens, and kids. In 2005, WildPlay was born. At WildPlay, they ensure that the park is developed in a perfect location where it not only respects Mother Nature but also showcases it.
At WildPlay, there are three obstacle courses that are self-paced. Monkido is the name of these courses. The actions at the Monkido obstacle course includes climbing, zip lining, jumping, and swinging. At Monkido, people have to navigate their way through log ladders, nets, rope swings, tight ropes, swinging logs, and other surprises that may appear on the course. As the person continues through Monkido, the course gradually becomes higher and more challenging.
I was very eager and excited to take on the course at WildPlay because I am a person who likes challenges. After our training session came to an end, I began to get butterflies in my stomach and my heart started to pound with mix feelings of excitement and nervousness. As the course went on, I gained the confidence and I was determined to finish and accomplish the course. I even took on the Tarzan swing, which you use a rope to swing from one platform to another. After completing the course, I truly felt proud of myself. I was also proud of my brother who is not the best when it comes to heights but he was able to battle the fear and accomplish the course with me. WildPlay was an immensely fun and challenging experience. WildPlay is great for people who love a good challenge but also for those who want to step out of their comfort zone.
My tips for the courses at WildPlay is to be courageous, take deep breaths, and have fun. It is at your own pace, so there is no need to rush. Take your time… I highly recommend trying out the Tarzan swing!
Make sure you check out their website: http://wildplay.com/maple-ridge/ for tips, booking ahead, FAQ’s, and most importantly to sign the waiver form.
Be sure you drive slow and carefully as the roads to WildPlay are winding.
Miss Teenage Maple Ridge 2016
On May 28th, 2016, I was invited as a guest speaker to The Luvimin Bisaya Association; a Filipino association, Meet and Greet event. I was asked to speak about my experiences competing in pageants, as I competed in Luvimin Bisaya’s Miss Calendar Girl 2015 pageant and won the title.
This event was not only a meet and greet for the members of the association, and encouraging others to join, but it was also a charity event for the Elementary School Supplies Drive for Remote Philippines. At this event, I did a speech, and I talked about what drew me into pageantry, the competitions I had competed in and my current title.
Before my speech, I was asked to showcase my new sash along with my walk around the hall. After my walk, speech, and other entertainment, I dined, danced, conversed and befriended other guests.
I had a scrumptious dinner, of a variety of different Filipino cuisine. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. As the day progressed, I danced to my hearts content. Ending the night with many heartfelt goodbyes. It was my pleasure to be a part of something that came with such purpose.
Miss Teenage Maple Ridge 2016
(I thought I would coordinate the number of facts with my age haha)
Full Name: Shawna Nicole Taylor Warhurst
Nickname: I get called Shawn, Shawanee and Princess by mainly family and close friends.
Birthdate: September 12, 1997
Zodiac Sign: Virgo
Ethnicity: I am Filipino-Spanish and English-Irish. My ethnicity is a guessing game to many and I don’t usually get Filipino off the bat. Most people assume I’m half caucasian but I have had some think I was full caucasian. I usually get half caucasian and half Chinese or Japanese. It’s pretty interesting and not to mention entertaining to hear what people come up with.
Job: I work at a retail store called GUESS and I have been there for almost a year now. I love fashion so it was a dream come true working retail for my first job.
Countries Visited: I’ve been to 4 countries so far in my life. I’ve been to the Philippines, U.S.A, Mexico, and Guatemala. I was planning on going to Japan this summer with my brother but that had to be postponed so I could focus on competing in Miss Teenage Canada. The world, people, and different cultures fascinate me and I want to travel as much as possible when given the opportunity.
Sports: I play league soccer but I enjoy playing a majority of different sports such as volleyball, basketball, field hockey, ultimate frisbee, badminton ETC . I may not be all that good but that doesn’t stop me from playing them!
Pets: I love dogs, they are my favorite animal. I have four dogs: three chihuahuas named Kiki, Kiko and Momo and one Wheaten Terrier named Lulu.
Favourite Book Series: Forest of Hands and Feet. I love reading when I have the time. Really immersing yourself into a story is an experience like no other. I enjoy a wide variety of genres such as history, romance, mystery, horror, biography, health, religion, poetry, biography, fantasy, manga and religion. Just to name a few… haha.
Favourite Movie: My all time favorite movie is Howl’s Moving Castle which was produced by Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli has to be one of my top favorite movie producing companies. I never get tired of watching their movies. It always leaves me feeling a lot better no matter what kind of mood I’m in.
Favourite Colour: Yellow
Favourite Music Genre: I enjoy a variety of different genres from classical to rap, but I mainly listen to alternative and K-pop.
Favourite Shows: I don’t watch a lot of television but when I do I watch Say yes to the Dress or Ghost Hunters. I also enjoy watching history documentaries as well.
Favourite Cuisine: I’m a vegetarian so I don’t eat meat and eggs ETC. I do a lot of cooking for myself since I’m the only one in my family who doesn’t eat meat. Most people assume I do it for dietary reasons but that is not the case. I am a vegetarian because I am an animal advocate but that is a whole different topic. I love food with a lot of flavours so I would say one of my favorite cuisines would be Indian Dishes.
Favorite Quote: “A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it. It just blooms.”
Biggest inspiration: My biggest inspiration would be my two Grandma’s my Grandma Joan and Lola Luz. My Grandma Joan passed away two years ago but she still hasn’t left us. I feel her presence every day and I often ask myself “What would Grandma do in this situation?” or “How would Grandma feel about this?”. My Grandma was a strong woman and refused to take nonsense from nobody. I think that’s a trait that got passed down from her to me is her headstrong attitude. My Lola Luz is a very compassionate and thoughtful woman. Whenever I’m upset my Lola is the first person to take notice and whenever I need someone to talk to she is there to console me. They are both equally impactful women who I have learned and gained so much from.
Proudest Accomplishment: My proudest accomplishment isn’t your typical “I won this award” or “I got accepted into this school” moment. My proudest accomplishment was overcoming the lowest point in my life which was over three years ago. It taught me how to cope with hardships, to step out from my comfort zone, to create a positive mindset, and work hard for what I wanted for myself.
Miss Teenage Maple Ridge 2016
I am a well-rounded half Filipino and European descent. Born and raised here on September 12th, 1997 in British Columbia. I am the middle child of three. I have a brother who is a year older than me and a sister who is a year younger than me. I have 4 loveable dogs, Kiko, Kiki, Lulu, and Momo. As I have always been an avid animal rights advocate, 2 years ago I made a decision that changed my life. Becoming a Vegetarian is a lifestyle that I have chosen and will continue to pursue. My interests include reading books ranging from Health, Biographies, Thriller, Romance, and Fantasy. Books take me to another universe where I am able to indulge myself in the storyline and connect with the characters on another level. Watching movies is another way for me to relax when I have the chance. Documentaries, History, Action, Rom-Com, and Animated films are a few of my most watched categories and favorite genres. Exercising, staying fit, and being in shape is another part of my lifestyle. In addition, I enjoy playing sports such as Soccer, where I can display the competitive and leadership side of me. One of my other hobbies covers hiking, where I am able to explore and take in the natural beauty of mother nature. In the future, I would like to explore more trails leading to an assortment of adventures. Growing up, fashion is a big part of my childhood, I’ve always been keen on gaining more knowledge about current trends in the fashion industry and what makes a statement piece. Fashion has always been a way for me to self-expression. Throughout the years, fashion has allowed me to establish a better self-esteem. Somewhere down the road, I hope to pursue fashion design, focusing on creating and producing Vegan/Cruelty-Free apparel. I am also fascinated by the diversity of societies and the contrast of cultures. As I am quite open-minded, thus allowing me to acquire new knowledge about all traditions and different routines of each race. Growing older, I would like to take the opportunity to travel to all ends of the world and get an enhanced perspective of humanity and what establishes our civilization.
Miss Teenage Maple Ridge 2016
Hello, Everyone! ≧◡≦
It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
It’s still hard to believe that the Miss Teenage BC regional pageant was just over a month ago. Time sure does fly by, and now I’m counting down the days towards nationals. Regionals was a blast, the two days of competition sure were long and went by slow at the moment. Now that I look back, what seemed like a very long two days was actually quite the short amount of time. In the two days of competing, I was able to gain more knowledge, skills, and create new friendships!
Being part of Miss Teenage BC has been another unforgettable journey…
It has been an honor to have been selected as a finalist for Miss Teenage Canada 2016. I would like to give a big thank you to my family and friends for their unconditional support and more support to come as a continue this path.
